BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Miami University's baseball team was unable to recover from a three-run Indiana fourth inning as the RedHawks fell to the Hoosiers, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon. Miami (6-18) only gave up four hits to the Hoosiers, but Indiana (13-9) allowed just two RedHawk hits en route to earning the victory.
Indiana got the lead-off runner aboard in the third inning and two batters later, the Hoosiers had runners on first and second base with one out. Josh Phegely lined a ball into left-center field that was caught by a diving junior Chris Nadeau. However, on the catch by Nadeau, David Trager scored all the way from second base to put the Hoosiers ahead 1-0.
Miami got on the board in the fourth inning as freshman Adam Eaton struck out but advanced to first base on a passed ball. Freshman Jon Edgington placed a bunt to advance Eaton, but a throwing error by the Indiana pitcher placed runners of first and second base with no outs. A walk by Nadeau loaded the bases bring to the plate junior Jordan Petraitis. Petraitis grounded into a double play, which brought in Eaton from third base to tie the game, 1-1.
Indiana countered in its half of the fourth inning as three walks and a single turned into three Hoosier runs propelling Indiana to a 4-1 advantage.
Miami got a run back in the fifth inning as Miami used a lead-off hit and then played fundamental baseball to manufacture a run. Junior Eric Darlage led off with a double into right-center field and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt. On the next pitch, freshman Brad Gschwind hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Darlage and bring Miami within two runs, 4-2.
Three walks and a single allowed the Hoosiers to tack on a run in the fifth to re-establish a three-run lead, 5-2.
The RedHawks threatened in the eighth inning, but could not cross the plate, before being retired in the ninth as the Hoosiers defeated Miami, 5-2.
The RedHawks return to Mid-American Conference action this weekend when Miami welcomes Western Michigan to McKie Field at Hayden Park for a three-game series Friday, April 4 - Sunday, April 6. Friday and Saturday's games are set to begin at 6 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
