OXFORD, Ohio--In a hard-fought match between the only two undefeated teams in the Mid-American Conference, Miami University's (12-6; 6-1 MAC) women's tennis team came up short against Western Michigan University (14-7; 7-0 MAC), 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Athletic Club.
Miami's lone point of the match came from senior Kelly Douple at No. 5 singles. After falling to WMU's Ashley Moccia in the first set 6-7, Douple came back with 7-6, 6-3 wins to pull out the win in the fifth flight for the RedHawks. Douple remains undefeated MAC singles action with a 7-0 record.
Miami's No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Leda Pesatova and freshman Sydnee Bridger also picked up an 8-6 win. With wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, however, WMU took the first point of the match.
It was a battle in singles action with four of the six matches going three sets. Miami bounced back in the second set three of the four three-set matches to send them to a deciding third set.
At No. 1 singles, WMU's Kerstin Pahl edged freshman Anastasia Dracheva 7-6, 7-5. WMU's Priyanka Parekh took the first set 6-2 at No. 2 singles, but sophomore Brintney Larson came back with a 7-6 win to send it to a third set. Priyanka, however, came back to take the third set 6-3.
At No. 3 singles WMU's Noriko Saruta topped Pesatova 6-4, 6-4. WMU's Emily Dudzik won the first set at No. 4 singles 6-4, but freshman Megan Martzolf bounced back with a 7-6 win in the second set. Dudzik posted a 6-3 win in the third set to win in the fourth flight. At No. 6 singles, WMU's Amanda Moccia won 6-1 in the first set, but senior Victoria Pulido retaliated with a 6-2 win in the second set. Moccia pulled out the win at No. 6 singles, however, with a 6-3 win in the third set.
Miami plays its final regular-season match on Friday, April 18 when the RedHawks host Northern Illinois University at 1 p.m. The match is scheduled to be played on the Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts on Miami's campus.
