Miami Men's Swimmers Send 29 to Finals

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami men's swimming and diving team qualified 29 swimmers for the last night of finals of the 2008 Miami Invitational. Junior DAVE BROWN was the team's top qualifier with a fifth-place time in the 100-yard freestyle while sophomore Darin Smith swam his way to two championship-heat spots.
The morning started with six Miami swimmers qualifying for finals in the 200-yard backstroke. Smith led the way with a time of 1:53.75, good for ninth place. Joining him will be Chris Gunnels, Tom Janszen, MATT GRUBB, Austin Kosier and Justin Dankovich. The top qualifier of the event was Oakland University freshman Anders Jensen in a time of 1:49.43.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Smith was again the fastest RedHawk with a seventh-place swim in a time of 4:38.69, six seconds behind prelims winner Nathan Williams (4:32.17) of Cincinnati. Also making it back to finals for Miami were Brendan Melling, Scott DuCharme, and Brown.
Miami junior ROB JACKSON swam a :51.12 in the 100-yard butterfly, less than two-tenths of a second off his career best time, to qualify eighth. The top spot went to Cincinnati junior Josh Schneider (:48.64). Other qualifiers for the RedHawks were Jason Hass, John Eick, David Mead, Brooks Cowan and Dankovich. (continued below).
The 200-yard breaststroke featured four RedHawk qualifiers, led by junior Michael Carroll, who touched the wall in 2:11.84 in 15th place. Joining him will be Jason Bank, Kosier and Davis Mello. The event winner was Wright State freshman Davynn Peffer, who swam a time of 2:04.89.
Brown's time of :45.82 in the 100 free earned him the fifth-place qualifier behind Cincinnati's Schneider, who broke the meet record with a time of :44.22. RedHawks Mark Healey, Gunnels, Zachary Siegel, Eick and Jackson all will be back for the finals as well.
The final event of the morning was the 200-yard individual medley. The winner was Kevin Yamada of Emory who swam a 1:52.95. The top qualifier for the RedHawks was Bank, whose time of 1:57.64 qualified him 16th. The other Miami qualifiers were Hass and Carroll.
Coach Pete Lindsay's qualifiers will return to action Saturday at 6 p.m. for the final session of the meet. The event events will feature the finals of the 200-yard medley relay, 200 backstroke, 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 IM and 400 freestyle.
