Miami Drops Rival Bobcats 3-0

Oxford, Ohio - Miami moved into first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division Sunday with a 3-0 win over the rival Ohio Bobcats. The RedHawks are now 9-7 overall. Ohio falls to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the MAC.

With Andrea Atteberry serving to start set one, the RedHawks quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead off kills from Hallie Hanks and Emily Schroeder, as well as two Ohio attack errors. With the score 10-6 in favor of Miami, Schroeder and Atteberry each recorded kills, and the RedHawks went on a 7-1 run to open up a 17-7 lead. The teams traded points until Schroeder put down a kill to set up match point at 24-14. After Ohio's Sue Jacobi staved off one set point with a kill of her own, Atteberry found the corner of backline to win the set for Miami, 25-15.

The RedHawks built a small 12-10 lead during the first half of the second set. Miami then pulled ahead with a 7-0 run that featured two kills by Maria Leahy and a service ace by libero Melissa Zenz. The Bobcats tried to get closer with a 7-5 run that pulled them to within seven at 17-24, but Michele Metzler scored a kill that gave the RedHawks the 25-17 set two win.

Ohio took the early lead in set three at 9-5. After a timeout to regroup, Miami quickly went on an 8-3 run to take the lead at 13-12. The run featured an ace by Atteberry, as well as kills from Leahy, Griffin, Metzler and Schroeder. The RedHawks built the lead up to four at 22-18 thanks to three more kills from Schroeder. The Bobcats pulled to within one at 23-24, but Hanks scored the match winning kill off an assist from Atteberry.

Schroeder recorded 12 kills to lead Miami. Griffin continued a fine weekend of play with six kills on a .429 hitting percentage. Atteberry had 32 assists. The RedHawks hit .398 as a team, compared to .178 for Ohio.

Miami hits the road next weekend, as they travel to Buffalo to face the Bulls on Friday, October 10 at 7 p.m. They will then travel to Akron to face the Zips on Saturday, October 11 at 3 p.m.
