Xavier's Swimmers Travel to Oxford to Battle Miami

OXFORD, Ohio - RedHawk fans are encouraged to start a big day of athletic competition at the university's Recreational Sports Center when Miami's men's and women's swimming and diving teams host the Xavier Musketeers in a coed meet. The action begins at 1 p.m. There is no admission charge.
Miami's men are 1-0 in dual meet competition thus far in 2008-09, while the women are 1-1.
Xavier's men's and women's teams, coached by Steve Riegler, have both been picked to finish fourth in this year's Atlantic 10 preseason swimming & diving polls in voting conducted by the league's head coaches.
Coach Pete Lindsay's men's team began their season two weeks ago, defeating Evansville, 148-84. The RedHawks won 10 of the 13 events en route to the season-opening victory. In the 200-yard medley relay, freshmen CHRIS GUNNELS and MARK HEALEY captured their first win as RedHawks with the help of sophomores Jason Hass and Ryan Neff with a time of 1:38.04. Miami's 200-yard freestyle relay team--TREVOR TILLY, Darin Smith, Jason Hass, and JOHN EICK-- also took the top spot with a time of 1:31.17. Gunnels also placed first in the 100-yard freestyle (0:47.16) and in the 400-yard individual medley (4:12.89). Healey had the top time in the 50-yard freestyle (0:21.96).third. Jason Hass captured the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.47 in the 200-yard backstroke.DARIN SMITH finished first in the 200 yard freestyle, while Jason Bank took top honors in the 200-yard butterfly. ROB JACKSON won the 500 free in a time of 4:54.36. Freshmen divers CAMERON HORNER and JIMMY BERES made their debut with respective first- and second-place finishes in the one-meter dive.
Coach Dave Jennings' women's squad was in action on Thursday, defeating Purdue by a score of 171.00-129.00, and losing to nationally ranked Louisville, 185.00-114.00. Miami's Kasey Carpenter, a transfer from the University of Wisconsin, sparkled in her first competition as a RedHawk. She won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:01.57, the third-fastest time in Miami history. Carpenter placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of :57.51, Miami's eighth-best time in history. Other top performances included ALLISON STEVENS' second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.05), Kelsey Vehr's time of 1:05.58 in the 100-yard breaststroke and her 2:22.29 effort in the 200-breaststroke, Alyson Schmidt :23.78 in the 50-yard free (just 0:00.06 off her personal best) and :51.76 in the 100-yard free, KELSEY ANAGNOS' second-place finish in the one-meter diving competition, and Nicole Roddenbery's second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (57:21).
The next competition for Miami's men is vs. Purdue in Oxford on Friday, October 31, at 5 p.m. The women take a road trip to Buffalo and Akron on October 31 and November 1, respectively.
