OXFORD, Ohio - Playing at home for the first time in three weeks Friday, the Miami University volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over visiting Toledo for its seventh win in a row. The RedHawks improve to 14-7 overall, and 8-1 in the Mid American Conference. The Rockets are 10-12 and 2-7 in the MAC.
The RedHawks quickly opened up an 11-5 lead in set one. Emily Schroeder had three early kills to help start that run. With the score 13-10 in favor of the RedHawks, Michele Metzler recorded two kills as part of a 7-2 run that gave Miami a 20-12 advantage. That proved to be more than enough as Metzler put down a kill over an attempted block to give the RedHawks a 25-18 set one win.
Miami dominated the second set, winning 25-15. The first half of the set was competitive as the RedHawks took a 12-9 lead. The Rockets then had several attack errors that pushed their deficit to 11-20. Schroeder then scored back-to-back kills off assists from Michelle Mangia, and Megan Griffin finished off the set with one final kill of her own.
Similar to the previous set, set three was back and forth early on, with Miami eventually opening up a 10-7 lead. Maria Leahy's serve then helped the RedHawks break the set open as she forced Toledo into four consecutive attack errors, and then recorded a service ace to make the score 15-7. Miami kept up the pressure, pushing the lead to 21-10 thanks to kills from Griffin and Jenn Caylor. Three more attack errors by the Rockets gave Miami match point at 24-11, and Griffin scored a service ace to give the RedHawks the 25-11 set win. Miami closed set three on a 15-4 run.
The match featured a balance RedHawk attack as 13 members of the Miami roster received playing time. Griffin led the team with 11 kills, while Schroeder had 10, despite playing in only the first two sets. Andrea Atteberry had 30 assists, while Leahy recorded 11 digs. The team had 9.5 total blocks and hit .361 for the match, compared to .032 for Toledo.
Miami returns to action Saturday when they face Ball State at 7 p.m. at Millett Hall. The RedHawks will be raising money for the fight against breast cancer during that match as part of the Dig for a Cure national fundraiser.
