With the 64-57 win against Buffalo, Miami head coach Charlie Coles earned his 200th win at the helm of the RedHawk program and posted his 176th career MAC win to move into a tie with former Ohio University head coach Jim Snyder for second on the MAC's all-time league win chart. Coles is in his 12th season heading the Miami program and in his 18th season as a head coach in the MAC.
Trailing 44-43 in the second half, Miami caused two Bull turnovers as senior forward Tim Pollitz capped fast breaks with layups as the RedHawks took a 47-44 lead at 9:53. Tim Pollitz came up with both steals. Miami would not trail again, extending their lead to as many as eight points; 60-52 with 00:24 remaining.
Junior center Tyler Dierkers tied a career-high with nine rebounds. Dierkers also registered nine boards against Mississippi State on Nov. 25. Senior forward Tim Pollitz added eight rebounds, while junior guard/forward Eric Pollitz notched a career-high seven boards.
RedHawk junior guard Kenny Hayes scored 14 of Miami's 29 first-half points. Hayes finished with 20 points for the game to lead all scorers and set a new career high. His previous career high at Miami was 18 in the season opener against Xavier on Nov. 13. It marked the second straight game a RedHawk has scored 20 points as junior forward Michael Bramos scored 23 against Kent State on Jan. 17.
A game after registering a season-high-tying 16 turnovers, Miami had just nine turnovers for the game, including just four in the first half.
The MAC's top rebounding team, Buffalo, averaging 38.4 rpg, narrowly outrebounded the RedHawks, 43-42.
Miami held a 27-18 lead with 5:06 remaining in the first half, but Buffalo went on to outscore the RedHawks 13-2 over the final minutes of the half to take a 31-29 lead into the half.
The RedHawk win was Miami's first MAC win of the season and moved the Red and White to 4-2 at home this season. It snapped a five-game losing streak.
Miami moves to 15-4 in the all-time series against Buffalo.
Miami was without the services of junior forward Michael Bramos, who injured his left ankle on Thursday evening against Kent State.
Senior forward Tim Pollitz and reshirt junior guard/forward Eric Pollitz celebrated their 22nd birthday on Sunday with a RedHawk win.
