ATHENS, Ohio--Three RedHawks scored in double figures but it was not enough as Miami University's men's basketball team (6-8; 0-2 Mid-American Conference) lost at Ohio University (10-5; 1-1 MAC) on Saturday afternoon, 72-63.
Senior forward Tim Pollitz led the Red and White with 13 points, while junior guard Kenny Hayes added 12 points and junior forward Michael Bramos tallied 11 points. Tim Pollitz also amassed seven rebounds and a game-high four steals.
Ohio's Jerome Tillman led all players with 19 points, and Leon Williams added 18 points and a game-best eight rebounds.
A pair of jumpers by Bramos and Tim Pollitz and a 3-pointer by Eric Pollitz quickly lifted Miami to a 7-2 lead at 17:14 in the first half. Ohio went on a 10-0 run to capture a 12-7 advantage and a lead it would not relinquish. The Bobcats would lead by as many as nine in the first half off a Tillman three-point play with 5:18 to play, 31-22.
Miami rattled off six straight points off a pair of sophomore center Adam Fletcher layups and a Hayes layup to pull within three points with 1:59 remaining in the half, 33-30. Miami again was able to get within three points with 19 seconds to play in the first half, 37-34, off a Hayes jumper, but Ohio's Michael Allen put the Bobcat lead at five points at the half off a jumper with five seconds to play, 39-34.
Ohio pushed its lead to 16 points by the middle of the second half, 54-38 with 10:33 remaining. The RedHawks went on an 11-3 run, spurred by five points from freshman forward Nick Winbush and four points from Tim Pollitz, to close within eight points, 57-49 with 7:11 to play.
A junior center Tyler Dierkers layup with 2:55 to play put the RedHawks within six points, 61-55, and a Tim Pollitz trey with 33 seconds remaining again put the Red and White within six points, 69-63. Ohio, however, would score three points over the waning seconds to capture the 72-63 win.
Miami returns home for the first time in a month to host Kent State at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17. Thursday's game is part of Rivalry Week at Miami.
Notes: Eric Pollitz scored all nine of his points in the first half ... Michael Bramos recorded one blocked shot against the Bobcats and moved into a tie for 10th place on Miami's career blocked shot chart ... Bramos owns 68 career blocked shots ... Tim Pollitz's four steals were a career high.
