OXFORD, Ohio - Dropping a pair of midweek games, the Miami University softball team (14-29-1; 4-4 MAC) fell in both ends of doubleheader to the Purdue Boilermakers Tuesday night at Miami Softball Stadium. The RedHawks lost an eight-inning affair, 4-2, in the first game of the twinbill before the Boilermakers won the nightcap, 13-0, in five innings. Freshman Ashley Gartland was Miami's top performer in the doubleheader, finishing 3-for-5 and scoring a run.
GAME 1 - Purdue 4, Miami 2 (8 innings)
Box Score
A two-out, two-run single from Candace Curtis in the top of the eighth inning broke open a tie game and lifted Purdue a 4-2 win in game one of Tuesday's twinbill. After Miami tied the game in the sixth with a home run from freshman Alicia Hogl, Purdue loaded the bases in the eighth and used Curtis' single to score the eventual winning runs.
Purdue took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning after taking advantage of a Miami throwing error. With one out and runners at second and third, Ashley Hall popped up on a failed squeeze bunt attempt, but the throw to try and double up Alicia Spack at third was wide of the base, allowing her to race home with the game's first run.
The Boilermakers tacked on their second run of the game in the top of the fifth when Spack led of the frame with a home run. On the 3-2 offering, Spack lined an offspeed pitch off the top of the leftfield foul pole, giving Purdue a 2-0 lead. Miami limited the damage in the inning, however, as starting pitcher Shalise Lugo worked out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing an inning-ending popout and stranding three runners.
Pushing across an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, Miami cut Purdue's lead to 2-1. After a one-out walk to junior Breanna Robinson and an infield single from Gartland, freshman Briana Burke grounded into a fielder's choice. Trying to complete the double play, Purdue third baseman Ashley Hall fired to first base in an attempt to cut down Burke, but her throw was high and ended up in rightfield, allowing Gartland to score all the way from second.
Hogl knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when she led off the frame with a solo home run. Driving the 1-0 offering from Brooke Baker over the centerfield wall, Hogl left the yard for the sixth time this season, tying the Miami freshman single-season home run record. Hogl's sixth round tripper also moved her into fifth on the program's single-season chart, with four of her home runs coming at the new Miami Softball Stadium.
The two teams played a scoreless seventh inning, pushing the game into extra innings. Purdue then edged in front, 4-2, on the strength of Curtis' eight-inning, two-RBI single with the bases loaded. Working to a 1-2 count, Curtis lofted a soft single into right centerfield, plating a pair of runs.
Miami had the leadoff batter reach in the bottom of the eighth, but Purdue starter Brooke Baker (16-13) did not allow another base runner as she wrapped up a complete-game victory.
Gartland (2-for-3) was the only Miamian with a multi-hit game, while Hogl (1-for-3) drove in Miami's lone run.
GAME 2 - Purdue 13, Miami 0 (5 innings)
Box Score
A 10-run fifth inning secured a Purdue sweep of the non-conference doubleheader, as the Boilermakers' big inning sunk the RedHawks in a 13-0, five-inning loss. Purdue sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth, as six hits and four walks accounted for the Boilermakers' ten runs.
Following two scoreless innings, Purdue put three runs on the board in the top of the third. Spack led off the inning by homering on a full-count pitch to centerfield, and a RBI double from Katie Mitchell and an opposite-field single from Kelsey Haupert staked the Boilermakers to a 3-0 lead.
Batting around in the fifth, Purdue moved comfortably in front and wrapped up the win as it did not allow a run after Miami loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth.
Miami managed three hits in the nightcap, one each from senior Leslie Macedo, freshman Sarah Billstrom and Gartland.
The RedHawks resume conference action this weekend when they travel to Bowling Green and Toledo.
