SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Unable to solve San Diego State starting pitcher Christina Ross, the Miami University softball team (8-19; 0-0 MAC) was blanked, 5-0, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Aztec Classic. Ross tossed 5.2 innings of no-hit softball before allowing a sixth-inning single as she stymied Miami's bats for the majority of the game.
Both team struggled at the plate the first time through the batting order, as the game remained scoreless after three complete innings. San Diego State put a runner on base in each of the first three innings, none of which advanced into scoring position, while Miami managed only a two-out first-inning walk.
The Aztecs seized a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as they plated a pair of runs courtesy of a two Miami errors. After Taryin Casillas led of the inning with a single, Monica Alnes hit a single to rightfield on a hit-and-run. The ball was misplayed in the outfield, allowing Casillas to score from first, and the throw home to try and nab Casillas also was wild, which plated Alnes who was hustling on the basepaths.
San Diego State extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth on a RBI groundout from Casillas. Her one-out groundout plated Brittany Knudsen, who doubled to lead off the fifth.
Miami put runners on base in both the fourth and fifth inning but could not push a run across. Leadoff walks in both innings gave the RedHawks opportunities to cut into the Aztecs lead, but the big hit eluded Miami in each frame.
A home run from Kasey Mytinger to lead off the sixth inning pushed San Diego State's advantage to 4-0.
Miami notched its first hit of the game when junior Breanna Robinson laced a two-out single to centerfield in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Aztecs tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on Alnes' RBI single to centerfield.
Linch (3-9) took the loss in the circle despite only allowing one earned run in 4.0 innings. Robinson (1-for-3) had Miami's only hit of the game with her sixth-inning single.
Ross struck out 12 batters in her one-hit complete-game effort.
Miami hosts the inaugural Miami Softball Invitational next weekend (March 23-25), with the dedication game for its new softball stadium taking place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 23 against Purdue.
