LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Unable to get its offense on track, the Miami University softball team (7-14; 0-0 MAC) dropped a pair of games to the Loyola Marymount Lions Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field. Miami managed only six hits in the doubleheader as it fell, 1-0, in the opener and was downed, 7-0, in the second game.
GAME 1: LMU 1, Miami 0
In a pitcher's duel between Loyola Marymount's Melissa Dykema and Miami's Shalise Lugo, a two-out, second-inning run from the Lions proved to be the difference as Miami dropped a 1-0 decision. Miami managed only three hits in the loss, including a 2-for-2 effort from freshman Alicia Hogl.
Making only her second career start in the circle, Lugo (0-2) tossed six strong innings, mixing speed and location. Lugo allowed only three hits in the complete-game effort, striking out two and walking one. Ten of the 18 outs Lugo recorded were via flyball as she kept the Lions' offense off balance for the majority of the game.
Miami put a pair of runners on base in the first inning after a one-out walk to sophomore Alexis Javier and senior Leslie Macedo's double in the rightfield gap, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
Loyola Marymount took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning behind Chelsie Tysdal's two-out RBI single. Tysdal's opposite-field single plated Christine Foley, who had doubled with one out.
The RedHawks managed only two hits over the final six innings, as Hogl singled in both the second and fourth innings.
Dykema (13-5) finished with 10 strikeouts.
GAME 2: LMU, 7, Miami 0
Miami's bats stayed quiet in the second game of its twinbill at Loyola Marymount, as the RedHawks fell to the Lions, 7-0. Loyola Marymount banged out 12 hits and received a strong pitching performance from Tiffany Pagano, who tossed a complete-game three-hitter and struck out 14 batters.
After Miami left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, Loyola Marymount took a 1-0 lead off a one-out fielder's choice in the bottom of the first. The Lions loaded the bases after a walk, single and a fielder's choice, but starting pitcher Alex Vikartofsky limited the damage, by allowing only a single run.
The Lions added a run in the bottom of the third off a two-out RBI single from Christine Foley and extended their lead to 4-0 with a pair of fourth inning runs. A leadoff home run from Megan Ackerman and a two-out RBI single from Kirsten Witt accounted for Loyola Marymount's fourth-inning runs.
A pair of two out runs in the fifth inning and a RBI groundout in the sixth increased the Lions advantage to 7-0.
Pagano finished with 14 strikeouts, fanning at least a pair of Miami batters in each of the first six innings.
Miami continues midweek action tomorrow with a single game at Long Beach State. First pitch between the RedHawks and 49ers is slated for 2 p.m. (PT).
