Miami Edges Akron In Overtime, 64-62

OXFORD, Ohio -Sophomore guard/forward Michael Bramos scored five of Miami's six points in overtime gave the RedHawk men's basketball team a 64-62 overtime win over the Mid-American Conference East Division leader Akron. The Zips (20-6; 10-3 MAC) had a last-second 3-point attempt to win the game, but the shot fell short giving the RedHawks (14-12; 9-4 MAC) their second overtime win in MAC play this season.

Senior forward Nathan Peavy scored six of Miami's first 10 points, leading the RedHawks to a 10-7 advantage by the 12:29 mark of the first half. Back-to-back layups by Jeremiah Wood kept the Zips within one point of Miami, 16-15, with 6:22 to play in the first half. Consecutive 3-pointers by senior guard Doug Penno sparked a 10-2 run for the RedHawks over the next 3:46, giving Miami a 26-17 lead with 2:36 remaining in the first half. A layup by junior forward Tim Pollitz with 12 seconds to play in the first half gave Miami a 32-22 lead heading into halftime. Peavy led Miami with 10 points in the first half, while Wood paced the Zips with 10 first-half points.

A 3-pointer by freshman guard Alex Moosmann at the 18:36 mark of the second half gave Miami its biggest lead of the game, 35-22. Miami's lead remained in double figures until Akron went on a 13-3 run from the 13:33 mark to he 8:21 mark, cutting Miami's lead to one, 46-45. A trey by Nate Linhart with 6:08 to play in the game gave Akron a 50-48 lead, its first since leading 7-6 at 15:37 in the first half. Two free throws by sophomore guard Eric Pollitz and a layup by Tim Pollitz catapulted the RedHawks back in front, 56-53, with 4:17 remaining. Miami and Akron traded buckets over the next three minutes, and a free throw by Dru Joyce with 31 seconds to play sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Bramos hit two free throws and a 3-pointer giving Miami a 63-30 lead with 2:24 to play in the extra period. Jeremiah Wood hit the front end of two free throws for Akron, but could not connect on the second free throw, which kept the RedHawks up by one point with 34 seconds left. Penno hit one-of-two free throws with 20 seconds left, giving the Zips a chance to win or send the game into double overtime. A 3-point attempt by Joyce fell short, giving Miami the 64-62 win.

Four RedHawks scored in double figures led by Tim Pollitz's 17 points. Peavy, Penno, and Bramos added 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively. Romeo Travis, Wood, and Joyce scored 15 points apiece for the Zips.

Miami plays its final home game on Saturday, Feb. 24 against Buffalo as part of a men's and women's doubleheader. The RedHawks are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. or 30 minutes following the completion of the women's game, which tips at noon. Miami will honor its three seniors; Monty St. Clair, Nathan Peavy, and Doug Penno, as they play in their final game at Millett Hall.
