YPSILANTI, Mich. - Freshman Karen Frazier finished as the conference runner-up in the 200 individual medley and senior Margaret Patrick placed third in the 50 freestyle as the Miami University women's swimming and diving team (12-0; 7-0 MAC) wrapped up the second day of competition at the 2007 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. Heading into day three of the meet, Miami (196 points) stands third and trails first-place and defending champion Eastern Michigan (257) and second-place Ohio (224).
Frazier and Patrick were the only Miamians to post top-three finishes on day two of the conference meet, as both athletes picked up valuable points for the RedHawks. In the 200 IM, Frazier clocked in with a second-place time of 2:05.33, which ranks as the eighth-fastest time in program history. Patrick, meanwhile, placed in the MAC's top three in the 50 freestyle for the third straight season, turning in a season-best time of 23.61.
Miami's highest scoring event on Thursday was the 500 freestyle, as three RedHawks placed among the event's top-10 finishers. Sophomore Jenn Flaherty was the top Miamian in the event with a sixth-place time of 4:59.04, while senior Ashley Seymour and junior Kathryn Stephens placed seventh (5:00.63) and 10th (5:01.21), respectively.
The Red and White also placed three athletes in the finals of the 50 freestyle, with Patrick pacing a strong contingent of sprinters. In addition to Patrick's third-place finish, sophomore Alyson Schmidt and junior Kristen Bezier placed in the consolation final of the event, with Schmidt in 10th (24.22) and Bezier in 15th (24.44).
On the 1-meter board, three Miamians placed ninth through 11th, as freshman Kelsey Anagnos (229.25), sophomore Melissa Roemmele (220.05) and sophomore Alex Enriquez (219.45) finished in descending order.
In the only relay event of the day, Miami placed third in the 200 freestyle relay. The relay team of sophomore Allison Stevens, senior Diana Zeleznikar, Schmidt and Patrick touched the wall with a time of 1:34.47, good for the fourth-fastest clocking in program history.
Looking to move up in the standings, Miami continues with day three of the four-day meet tomorrow with the swimming preliminaries at 11 a.m. Live results for the meet will not be available due to technical difficulties.
