OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's men's swimming team won eight of 11 events to win a dual meet against Xavier at Nixon Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. Eight different RedHawk swimmers earned wins in the meet.
After Xavier won the 400 Medley Relay to begin the meet, freshman Darin Smith and junior Scott DuCharme took first and second place in the 1000 freestyle to bring Miami within a point of Xavier. A three-second win by senior Chase Mortimer in the 200 freestyle started a series of first-place finishes for the RedHawks. After Mortimer's win in the 200 freestyle, sophomore Dave Brown won the 50 freestyle, freshman Jason Hass finished first in the 200 individual medley and junior Davis Mello earned a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly. In three of those four events, Miami had 1-2 finishes.
After Xavier finished 1-2-3 in the 100 freestyle, sophomore Matt Grubb squeaked out a win by three tenths of a second to win the 200 backstroke (1:57.44), before DuCharme touched the wall first with a time of 4:49.38 to win the 500 freestyle. An impressive four-second win by sophomore Michael Carroll gave Miami a comfortable lead heading into the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. Xavier finished 1-2 in the relay, but the RedHawks defeated the Musketeers, 109-87.
Miami's next meet is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, when the RedHawks welcome Cleveland State to Nixon Aquatic Center.
