MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- In its opening match of the Blue Raider Bash, the Miami University volleyball team fell in three games (26-30, 23-30, 19-30) to host Middle Tennessee State. The RedHawks fell to 3-5 on the young season while the Blue Raiders moved to 5-2.
Miami jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before Middle Tennessee State was able to notch the game at 11-11. The Blue Raiders extended their lead to 12-15 before a kill by freshman setter Andrea Atteberry and an error by Middle Tennessee State made the score 15-15. The score remained tied as late as 22-22, but the Blue Raiders rallied off three consecutive points to take a 25-22 lead. Miami would get back within two at 26-28, but Middle Tennessee State took the first game 30-26.
Miami began the second game by jumping out to a 5-3 advantage before Middle Tennessee State rallied to take a 10-7 lead. Miami crawled its way back to tie the game at 10 off of a kill by freshman middle hitter Hallie Hanks and two consecutive service aces by junior middle hitter Carli Reihman. The game remained close as neither team attained a lead of more than two points until Middle Tennessee State scrapped together four consecutive points to take a 25-21 advantage. The RedHawks could not overcome the deficit as Middle Tennessee State won game two 30-23.
Two kills apiece by Reihman and sophomore outside hitter Emily Schroeder jump started Miami to an early 6-3 advantage in game three. Middle Tennessee State battled its way back to even the game at 10-10 and three Miami errors helped the Blue Raiders take six of the next seven points giving Middle Tennessee State a 16-11 lead. The RedHawks cut their deficit to four at 15-19, but it was not enough as the Blue Raiders went on to take game three, and the match, 30-19.
Miami was led by Reihman who amassed 15 kills while Middle Tennessee State's Ashley Adams matched Reihman with 15 kills to lead the Blue Raiders.
The RedHawks will complete the Blue Raider Bash on Saturday as they square-off with Creighton at 2:30 p.m. (CT) and Illinois-Chicago at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
