OXFORD, Ohio -- After a scoreless first half, a pair of Indiana University goals early in the second were too much for the Miami University field hockey team to overcome despite a fierce battle in the second half. The Hoosiers scored twice early in the second frame, forcing the RedHawks to turn up the offensive pressure, but a goal late in the half was not enough as the RedHawks fell 2-1.
The first half was a defensive struggle on both sides of the ball that resulted in each captain receiving green cards. Miami University sophomore goalkeeper Megan Stengel (Louisville, Ky.) dove and prevented the Hoosiers from gaining a lead midway through the first. Stengel's diving save off a shot from the top of the circle by Morgan Miller preserved the scoreless half.
Miami was forced to leap into action as Indiana's Lydia Schrott, and Morgan Miller found the back of the cage giving the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead early in the second. Miami's increased offensive pressure resulted in five penalty corners, one resulting in Miami's lone goal by Danielle Perrecone (Carlsbad, Calif.) Perrecone's second goal of the year came off a direct shot from the top of the circle, which deflected off an Indiana defender before it found its way behind Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner with just under nine minutes to go. Despite Miami's offensive push in the game's final eight minutes the RedHawks were unable to even the score.
Stengel made four saves in the contest and saw her record drop to 0-2, while Exner made six saves and improved her record to 3-1. The RedHawks held their edge in penalty corners, 11-9.
Miami returns to action when it travels to Vermont to face the host Catamount on Sept. 9 before facing New Hampshire on Sept. 10.
