TOLEDO, Ohio - One hundred and twenty minutes was not enough time to decide a winner Friday afternoon at Scott Park as the Miami University women's soccer team (4-5-1; 1-1-1 MAC) and the Toledo Rockets played to a 2-2, double-overtime draw. Miami picked up one point in the Mid-American Conference standings by tying Toledo, which remained unbeaten in conference play.
Miami carried a 2-1 lead into the 84th minute before Toledo (3-5-3; 2-0-1 MAC) tallied the equalizer, and both teams played to a stalemate over the final 36 minutes of the match. The tie is the first for the RedHawks since Sept. 17, 2004 when they played to a 1-1 draw with the Northern Illinois Huskies.
Striking less than 90 seconds into the game, Toledo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal at the 1:13 mark. Diana Ginley was credited with the unassisted tally, which was her third goal of the season.
The Rockets held their one-goal lead for nearly 74 minutes before Miami tied the game with a goal at the 74:59 mark. Redshirt freshman Jackie Hardek (Wheaton, Ill.) found the back of the net for the second time this season, with senior Kate Padfield (Hudson, Ohio) notching her first assist of the season on the scoring tally. Padfield's helper was the second of her career and the 275th in Miami women's soccer history.
Needing less than three minutes to score the go-ahead goal, Miami pushed ahead, 2-1, at the 77:03 mark when Kathleen Vistica (Monrovia, Md.) connected with freshman Jodi Zwingelberg (Elgin, Ill.). The goal was Zwingelberg's second of the season, while the assist was Vistica's third of the year and 17th of her career. The helper moved Vistica ahead of Ashley Swinehart (2001-04) for sole possession of fourth place on the Miami all-time assist chart.
Responding at the 83:42 mark, Toledo knotted the game when Candice Choquette scored an unassisted goal.
Miami managed three shots over the final 10 minutes of the game and the two extra periods, but shots by Hardek, and sophomores Kristin Smith (Cary, N.C.) and Courtney Elsen (Madison, Conn.) were off the mark.
Making her fourth straight start, freshman goalkeeper Krista Pace (Toronto, Ontario) played all 120 minutes and notched three saves.
With the tie, Miami is now unbeaten in its last three road games and 3-1-1 away from Oxford this season. The draw also moved Miami's all-time record against Toledo to 4-5-1. The RedHawks are unbeaten in four of their last five matches against the Rockets.
Miami finishes out its second MAC weekend Sunday when it faces the Bowling Green Falcons at Cochrane Park. Gametracker will be available for the 1 p.m. match.
