OXFORD, Ohio--After Miami University's volleyball team captured the first two games against Boston College 30-20 and 30-26 in the final match of the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Classic, the Eagles came back to collect 30-25, 30-25 wins over the next two games. Miami, however, edged Boston College (0-3) in the fifth game, 17-15, to move to 3-3 on the season.
For Miami, sophomore outside hitter Emily Schroeder and junior middle hitter Carli Reihman earned all-tournament team honors. The accolade was Reihman's fifth consecutive dating back to the Hofstra Invitational in 2005 and her second this season.
In the first game, a kill and a service ace by junior outside hitter Jeanna Staun got Miami out of the gates quickly as the RedHawks collected the first three points of the game. Miami would push its lead to 11 points, 29-18, off a Schroeder kill. Boston College staved off the Miami attack with a kill from Kelsey Johnson and a block by Johnson and Shardai Davis to put the score at 29-20 in favor of the RedHawks. Another Schroeder kill iced the first game for the `Hawks, 30-20
Miami led by as many as nine in the second game, the last coming at 22-13, but Boston College used a 7-2 run spurred by three Abigail Hasebroock kills to shrink the gap to four points, 24-20. The Eagles were able to close within three points three times down the stretch, the last coming at 26-29, but freshman outside hitter Maria Leahy hammered home a kill to clinch the second game for the RedHawks, 30-26.
In the early stages of the third game, Boston College built leads of four points, including an 11-7 edge. Miami came back to knot the game 12-12 and 14-14. A Kelsey Johnson kill put the Eagles ahead for good as they went on to the 30-25 game-three win.
The teams went back and forth throughout much of the fourth game. After a 20-20 tie, Boston College went on to a 24-20 lead, sparked by two Johnson kills and a block by Johnson and Hasebroock. Miami closed within two twice, the last at 25-27 off a Staun kill, but Boston College collected three straight points off Miami miscues to take the fourth game, 30-25.
Miami led by scores of 7-3 and 8-4 in the fifth game, but Boston College crept back to knot the game, 9-9. The teams battled back and forth until kills by Reihman and Staun iced the match, 17-15.
Four RedHawks posted double-digit kills including Schroeder who posted a team-high 22 kills. Reihman notched 16 kills while Staun and Griffin had 16 kills and 10 kills, respectively. The Eagles were led by Johnson who amassed a match-high 28 kills.
