OXFORD, Ohio - A trio of first half goals were all the Miami University field hockey needed on Sunday afternoon to defeat New Hampshire, 3-0, on the final day of the Sheraton Catamount Field Hockey Classic. The RedHawks found the back of the cage three times in a span of 18 minutes before clamping down defensively in the second half for the victory.
Senior Deb Leighton opened the scoring for the Red and White at the 15:11 mark with her first goal of the season. Coming off a penalty corner, junior Taylor Florence took the initial shot from the top of the circle, but it was Leighton who was waiting on the doorstep where she redirected the ball past New Hampshire's Margaux Shute.
Just over 10 minutes later it was Florence who doubled Miami's lead with an unassisted tally, her fourth of the season, that came when she banged home the rebound of her own shot at the 25:46 mark.
Senior Danielle Perrecone continued the offensive onslaught for the RedHawks with her fourth goal of the season, and second in as many games. Off another corner, the RedHawks worked the ball around the top of the circle, eventually finding junior Laura Seidel who moved the ball to Perrecone near the far post where she buried it in the back of the cage with 2:11 remaining in the first half.
Miami's defense took over in the second half, limiting UNH to just four shots in the half, none of which found their way on net as freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Dean earned the first shutout of her collegiate career. Dean made four stops in the game and improved her record to 3-1 on the season.
The RedHawks return to action on Sept. 13 when they travel to Columbus to battle the Ohio State Buckeyes at 3 p.m.
NOTES: JR Taylor Florence, SR Danielle Perrecone and FR Mary Hull earned all-tournament team honors.
