LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For the second time in as many games, the Miami University field hockey team found itself on the wrong side of an overtime decision as the RedHawks were downed 4-3 by No. 14 Louisville on Friday. Trailing 3-1 at halftime, Miami responded with a pair of tallies in the second half to force the extra frame but was unable to hold off a Cardinal offensive attack that outshot the RedHawks 17-9.
Allison Maffitt put Louisville up 1-0 just 2:40 into the first half when she took a pass from Jessica Javelet and tucked it inside the right post past Miami's Megan Stengel. The Cardinals doubled their lead less than 10 minutes later on a goal Carrie Jackson that was again assisted by Javelet.
Junior Meghan McMurtry (San Marcos, Calif.) cut Louisville's lead in half at the 22:28 mark with her first goal of the season. After the RedHawks were awarded a penalty corner, McMurtry tipped classmate Taylor Florence's (Louisville, Ky.) shot from the top of the circle behind UL's Marie-Claire Heller.
Louisville restored its two-goal lead shortly after McMurtry's first goal of the season, when Casey Diener lifted a pass from Missy Briery into the top left corner of the net behind Stengel to make it 3-1.
The RedHawks hit the field running in the second half and wasted no time finding the back of the cage as freshman Mary Hull (San Diego ,Calif.) and senior Danielle Perrecone (Carlsbad, Calif.) combined to reduce Louisville's lead to 3-2 just 1:49 into the half. From well outside the 16-yard circle, Perrecone threaded a pass inside to Hull, who beat Heller with her second goal of the season.
Sophomore Teja Kammler (Telford, Pa.) drew the RedHawks even with the Cardinals in the game's 37th minute with her second goal of the year. Hull drew the assist, her first as a collegian, after finding Kammler beside the net with a pass from the top of the circle.
Freshman Kelsey Dean (Louisville, Ky.) replaced Stengel in goal for Miami to start the second half and allowed the RedHawks to mount the comeback as she turned away all seven shots she faced in regulation, sending the game to overtime tied 3-3.
In the fourth minute of overtime Louisville finally solved Miami's rookie keeper with a goal by Janelle Avila that beat Dean on the stick side.
The Cardinals held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners in the contest, including a 6-0 edge in the second half and overtime combined.
Miami returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest versus Dartmouth.
