RedHawks Roll Past Golden Grizzlies, 72-46

OXFORD, Ohio--Behind a 50.9 percent shooting effort from the field, Miami University's men's basketball team put forth a strong effort and downed Oakland University on Sunday afternoon at Millett Hall, 72-46.
The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the RedHawks, improving their record to 4-6. Oakland dropped to 6-5 on the season.
Entering the game averaging 15.0 turnovers per game, Miami took care of the ball against the Golden Grizzlies, committing a season-low six turnovers. Oakland posted 17 turnovers, which Miami converted into 25 points. The RedHawks also snagged a season-high 11 steals and added a season-high six blocked shots.
A pair of buckets by senior forward Nathan Peavy helped Miami to a quick 6-1 lead by the 16:27 mark of the first half. Oakland came back to knot the game off a Derick Nelson three-point play with 11:47 remaining, 11-11, but a senior center Monty St. Clair 3-pointer at the 11:33 mark gave the RedHawks the lead for good. With 6:46 to play in the first half, Vova Severovas scored on a layup to put the Golden Grizzlies within four points, 21-17. Miami used a 12-3 run over the next 5:33 to post a 13-point edge by the 1:13 mark, 33-20. Peavy scored seven of the RedHawks'12 points during the spurt. Three-pointers by Oakland's Nelson and Erik Kangas cut the Miami lead to seven points at the half, 33-26.
Miami stormed out of the gates in the second half, opening up a 20-point lead off a 13-0 scoring flurry. Peavy opened the half with a 3-pointer at the 19:09 mark, while sophomore guard/forward Michael Bramos chipped in four points during the run and junior forward Tim Pollitz capped the scoring surge with a layup at the 14:28 mark to hand the RedHawks a 46-26 lead. A Nelson jumper with 14:05 remaining provided Oakland with its first points of the half. A jumper by freshman guard Alex Moosmann put Miami's lead back in the 20s with 11:56 remaining, 50-29. With 2:25 remaining, a jumper by redshirt freshman center Adam Fletcher pushed the Miami lead to a game-high 30 points, 72-42. Oakland's Shawn Hopes knocked down a pair of free throws and Nelson added a layup to round out the scoring and make the final score 72-46 in favor of the RedHawks.
Peavy led all players with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Moosmann tallied a season-high 13 points and also amassed eight of the RedHawks' 17 assists. Tim Pollitz was the other RedHawk to score in double figures with 10 points.
Oakland was led by Severovas and Nelson with 13 points apiece.
Miami has a 10-day break before heading to Dayton, Ohio, to battle the Flyers at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 20. The game will be televised locally on WHIO-TV.
