OXFORD, Ohio - After taking a week off from competition for Thanksgiving Break, the Miami University women's swimming and diving team (5-0; 4-0 MAC) resumes action this weekend when it hosts the 13th Annual Miami Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Nixon Aquatic Center. The RedHawks, who are 5-0 this season and ranked fourth in the CollegeSwimming.com Division I Mid-Major Poll, welcome 10 teams to Oxford for the three-day invitational.
Leading the way the RedHawks -- who finished third at last season's Miami Invitational --- is freshman Karen Frazier, who set a Miami varsity record in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.18) against Akron on Oct. 27 and later tied her own school record against Ball State on Nov. 3. Named the Mid-American Conference Swimming of the Week on Oct. 31, Frazier has won six individual events through five meets, including a sweep of the breaststroke events in Miami's dual meet victory over Eastern Michigan three weeks ago.
Other Miami swimmers who have posted impressive showings early in the season include sophomore Allison Stevens, who won three individual events against Eastern Michigan, and sophomore Alyson Schmidt, who swept the breaststroke events against the Eagles. Not to be overlooked with the RedHawks' strong youth movement are junior Kristen Bezier, the 2006 MAC Champion in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and senior Margaret Patrick, the 2006 MAC Runner-up in the 50 freestyle, both who have played vital roles in Miami's undefeated start.
Miami's divers also look to build upon their solid showing at the Indiana Invitational two weeks ago. Sophomore Melissa Roemmele placed 10th on the 1-meter board and 13th on the 3-meter board in Bloomington, and she was the only Miamian to advance to the finals of a diving event. Freshman Kelsey Anagnos, who swept the boards at Miami's season-opening meet against Akron, also leads a deep diving corps that will help the RedHawks pick up valuable points at the Miami Invitational title.
Off to a hot start this season, Miami has won its first five dual meets and extended its streak of MAC dual meet wins to 43 with its 86-point victory over the defending conference champion Eastern Michigan Eagles on Nov. 11. The Miami Invitational is the final meet of the fall semester for the RedHawks.
