SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Sophomore Brian Kaufman's (Shoreview, Minn.) goal midway through the second period was all the offense the Miami University RedHawks (7-4-0, 4-3-0 CCHA) could muster on Friday night as the Lake Superior State Lakers (6-3-0, 3-2-0 CCHA) skated to a 2-1 win in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action.
After a scoreless period, Lake Superior State got on the board first with a goal at 6:20 of the second on a shot from the left point by Derek A. Smith. A Miami clearing attempt was intercepted inside the blueline and the puck made its way to Smith at the point, where he wristed a shot through traffic and past a screened Charlie Effinger (Belleville, Ill.).
Miami rebounded at 9:33 of the period with the teams skating 4-on-4 on Kaufman's second goal of the season. Working hard on the forecheck, freshman Jarod Palmer (Fridley, Minn.) forced a turnover behind the LSSU net and found Kaufman in the slot before he beat Jeff Jakaitis with a backhanded shot to make the score 1-1.
The deadlock did not last long Smith scored his second goal of the game in almost identical fashion to his first one. Matt Martello picked up a loose puck in the Miami zone and found Smith at the left point, where his wrist shot hit the bottom of the cross bar and ricocheted in at the 11:44 mark for a 2-1 LSSU lead.
Miami threatened to score on numerous in the third period, but could not solve Jakaitis, despite pulling the goalie in favor of an extra attacker for most of the games final 1:30. Jakaitis made 25 saves and improved to 4-3-0 on the season, while Effinger turned away 20 shots and dropped to 4-2-0.
The RedHawks and Lakers close out the two-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
