OXFORD, Ohio--Miami University's volleyball team (12-14; 8-5 Mid-American Conference) suffered a three-game loss to Bowling Green (23-3; 12-1 MAC) on Wednesday evening at Millett Hall, 21-30, 18-30, 29-31.
Bowling Green took a 12-9 lead early in the first game. Miami rallied to score the next six points, including two junior middle hitter Carli Reihman kills, and captured a 15-12 advantage. But just as quickly as it built its lead, Miami quickly saw its advantage evaporate as the Falcons went on a 7-0 run, sparked by two Chelsey Meek kills and two blocks by Stephanie Swiger and Corrie Mills, to notch 19-15 lead. Miami was able to pull within one point twice, the last coming a 19-20 off a Reihman kill, but the Falcons surged ahead with another 7-0 run to post a 27-19 lead and went on to the 30-21 game-one win.
The teams went back and forth throughout the early stages of the second game, with sophomore libero Melissa Zenz knotting the game 11-11 with a service ace. Bowling Green rattled off four straight points with help from kills by Mills, Swiger and Chrissy Gothke to post a 15-11 advantage. The Falcons furthered their lead to 17-12 off a Gothke solo block and held a five-point edge at 19-14 off a kill by Cory Domek. Kills by freshman middle/outside hitter Melissa Griffin and junior setter Ashley Davis pulled the RedHawks within two points, 17-19, but the Falcons rounded out the set on an 11-1 run to capture the second game, 30-18.
After trailing 2-6 in the third game, Miami battled back to knot the game four times before taking a 12-10 lead off a 3-0 run, which was sparked by kills from Griffin and junior outside hitter Jeanna Stuan and a block by Griffin and Staun. Miami built its lead to 15-12 off a sophomore outside hitter Emily Schroeder service ace and further extended its lead to 19-15 off a Reihman kill. The RedHawks continued to hold a four-point advantage 22-18, but the Falcons crept back and took a 24-23 lead off a Miami ball handling error. The teams were tied a 24-24, 25-25, 26-26, 27-27, 28-28 and 29-29 before a Miami service error and a RedHawk attack error handed the third game to the Falcons, 31-29.
For Miami, Reihman had 10 kills, hit .375 and recorded five blocks, while Staun added nine kills, 10 digs and three blocks and Zenz tallied 14 digs.
Bowling Green was led by Madeline Means with 12 kills. Kendra Halm added eight blocks, while Meek recorded 15 digs.
The RedHawks return to action hosting Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 in the final regular-season home MAC match for the RedHawks. Miami will honor its two seniors--Katie Fleming and Kate Norris--prior to the match.
