OXFORD, Ohio - A defensive struggle that lasted 85 minutes came undone in the first minute of the second overtime period for the Miami field hockey team(7-9, 4-2 MAC) as a by Ohio University's Celine McNamara proved the difference in a 1-0 win for the Bobcats (8-7, 5-2 MAC). The loss was Miami's fifth in overtime this season, and second in double overtime.
After a scoreless first half, the RedHawks had a chance to win the game in regulation time as junior Meredith Corradino (Oceanport, N.J.) was awarded a penalty stroke with just over eight minutes remaining in the second half. Her shot, which appeared headed for the bottom right corner was saved by Ohio's Jessie Martin, who made eight saves in the contest.
Each team had a chance to seal the victory in the first overtime period. Miami was awarded three consecutive penalty corners early in the period but came away empty handed each time. Ohio found itself in a similar situation later in the period but Miami's Megan Stengel (Louisville, Kyi.) stood strong in the cage for the RedHawks. Stengel made six saves on the afternoon but suffered the loss and dropped to 4-8 on the season.
The decisive goal came in the game's 86th minute off the stick of McNamara after she picked up the rebound of a shot by Torrie Albini and stuffed into the cage.
Ohio outshot Miami 12-11 and held an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners. The win for Ohio University puts the Bobcats alone in first place in the Mid-American Conference with a 5-2 record, while Miami sits one-half game behind at 4-2.
The RedHawks return to action on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. versus conference rival Ball State.
