OXFORD, Ohio - Four different players found the back of the cage for Miami University (4-4, 1-0 MAC) on Friday afternoon as the RedHawks extended their winning streak to three games with a 4-0 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes (0-8, 0-1) in the conference opener for both schools. The three-game winning streak is the program's longest since the Red and White won three in a row during the 2000 season. The victory also marked the first time since the 1996 season that the RedHawks came out on top of the Golden Flashes.
Junior Danielle Perrecone (Carlsbad, Calif./San Dieguito) started the scoring barrage for Miami in the game's 13th minute when she blistered a shot from just inside the top of the circle off a penalty corner. Senior Keri von Kalinowski (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) and sophomore Alyssa Nye (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) were credited with the assists.
The scored remained 1-0 for Miami until the 41st minute as freshman Courtney Fretz (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) scored the first goal of her collegiate career with an assist from sophomore Taylor Florence (Louisville, Ky./Assumption). Fretz dove toward the left post and tipped Florence's pass behind Kent State's Linz Markwart for a 2-0 Miami advantage.
Sophomore Meredith Corradino (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) made it 3-0 for the RedHawks in the 45th minute, converting Miami's first penalty stroke of the season.
Sophomore Christine Loyd (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee Valley Country Day) put the icing on the cake less than eight minutes after Corradino's first goal of the year when she dove to deflect a pass from freshman Danielle Gaynor (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) at the left post for her third tally of the season to make the score 4-0. Nye was also credited with an assist.
Senior goalkeeper Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif.) poster her second consecutive shutout, as she made 10 saves and stymied eight Kent State penalty corners. Orr preserved the shutout late in the second half when she turned away a flurry of shots that resulted from a KSU penalty corner.
The RedHawks take the field again on Saturday as they host the Ohio Bobcats at 1 p.m. at Miami Turf Field.
NOTES: With 10 career shutouts, SR GK Kerri Orr is now tied for fifth on Miami's all-time shutouts list with Jenna Schmitz (1994-97) ... Miami's last victory in a MAC-opener was in 1998 when they defeated Ohio University, 3-2, in overtime ... Miami's last victory over Kent State was in 1996 (6-0).
