HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.--In its first match at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational, Miami University's volleyball team lost a three-game match to the IPFW Mastodons, 30-32, 20-30 and 27-30. Miami drops to 1-1 overall, while IPFW moves to 2-0 on the season.
Neither team led by more than two points in the early stages of the first game until IPFW was able to capture a 16-13 lead. The Mastodons would post 18-15 and 20-17 advantages until Miami staged a 6-0 run, highlighted by a sophomore middle hitter Carli Reihman kill and a senior setter Megan Clark service ace, to post its own three-point lead, 23-20. A kill by freshman middle hitter Emily Schroeder and a Reihman service ace pushed Miami's lead to 25-21. IPFW, however, stormed back, scoring five unanswered points to take a 26-25 lead. A block by Schroeder and sophomore outside hitter Jeanna Staun and kills by sophomore outside hitter Kate Norris and Schroeder put Miami at a two-point advantage, 28-26. IPFW came back to knot the game, 28-28, and eventually went on to the 32-30 game one win.
IPFW took commanding 20-13 lead in the first game and never looked back, posting a 30-20 win in the second set. Reihman had five kills in the second game for the RedHawks, while Schroeder had two kills and a block.
In the third game, Miami jumped out to a 7-2 lead with help from a kill and an ace from Reihman, an ace by Clark and kills by Schroeder, Staun and freshman outside hitter Alex Ratcliff. IPFW came back to tie the game, 11-11, but Miami went on an 8-1 run, spurred by two Schroeder kills and a block by Schroeder/Ratcliff, to post a 19-12 lead. The Mastodons chipped away at the RedHawk lead and eventually took a 25-24 advantage, forcing a Miami timeout. Reihman came back with a kill, but the Mastodons scored the next two points to take a lead they would not relinquish as they captured the third game, 30-27.
For Miami, Schroeder led the team with 13 kills, a .500 hitting percentage and four blocks, while Reihman added 12 kills and a .476 hitting percentage. Clark added 33 assists and a team-best 12 digs.
Fabiana Souza led IPFW with 22 kills, 13 digs and a .462 hitting percentage, while Claire Jackson notched five blocks (1 solo; 4 assist)
Miami returns to action at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 3, facing host Hofstra at 11:30 a.m. and Temple at 3:30 p.m.
