LISLE, Ill. - Former Miami University softball standout Jackie Poggendorf (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) won her second softball championship in three months as her professional team, the Akron Racers, took the 2005 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Championship by defeating the Chicago Bandits 5-4 on Aug. 28. Poggendorf's NPF title comes after she led the RedHawks to the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship in her final season wearing the Red and White.
Poggendorf scored the game-tying run in the seventh inning of the championship game after she pinch ran for Jenny Topping, who doubled with one out. An error by the Chicago second baseman allowed Poggendorf to score and even the game at 4-4, and the Racers took the lead for good in the eighth on a one-out homerun.
During the Racers 46-game schedule, Poggendorf saw action both on the field and in the circle. She compiled a .345 batting average (10-for-29) with four RBIs and 10 runs scored, and she also posted a 1-0 record with a 2.33 ERA in one appearance in the circle.
While at Miami, the highly decorated Poggendorf helped push the Miami softball program into the upper echelon of the MAC. The RedHawks made the MAC Tournament championship game in three of her four seasons, and as a senior, Poggendorf helped Miami win the MAC Tournament Title and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Individually, Poggendorf was a three time All-MAC selection, was named MVP of the MAC Tournament twice, and was a NFCA All-Mideast selection as a senior. Poggendorf left Miami as the all-time leader in strikeouts (672), wins (63), appearances (148), games started (106) and innings pitched (793.0).
