OXFORD, Ohio - The RedHawk collegiate synchronized skating team stands tied for second place among nine teams after the first day of competition at the U.S. Intercollegiate Figure Skating Team Championships at Miami University's Goggin Ice Arena.
Miami's 47 points are tied with Delaware's take on Saturday, bettered only by Dartmouth at 70 points. Boston University (31), California (24), Indiana (19), Michigan State (17), San Jose State (4) and Caltech (3) round out the field.
Most of the points at the meet are earned by individuals, rather than at the national meet held in Massachusetts in February, where Miami's team performances carried the RedHawk collegiate squad to a first-place finish.
Miami earned more than half of its points in the solo dance events, where the 25 RedHawk points were more than all other teams earned combined in the three disciplines. Miami's Pre-Intermediate skaters claimed 16 more points, more than any other team.
BU's Kristin Tudisco won both the free skate and the short program in the senior division. California's Katherine Specht took second in the short program and third in the free skate, while Dartmouth's Taylor Grant was runner-up in the free skate and fellow Big Green skater Nicole Newman was fourth in the free skate. Rounding out the top four in the short program was a pair of Indiana Hoosiers, with Kathryne Laughner in third and Katie Farrell in fourth.
In the junior division, Delaware's Laura Stefanik swept both the short program and free skate, winning all five first-place ordinals. The second through fourth place finishers were the same in both programs as well, with two Dartmouth competitors, Ariel Stern-Markovitz and Holly Ponichtera, coming in second and third, respectively. Tracy Mesner, competing for Miami, came in fourth in both events.
The event concludes Sunday morning when most of the team performances take place. Skating begins at 8 a.m.
