RedHawks Pull Out Close 54-52 Win at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind.--Sophomore forward Nathan Peavy hauled in an offensive rebound after Chet Mason heaved a half-court shot and tossed in a bucket as time expired to lift Miami to a 54-52 win at Ball State. Miami improved to 15-5 overall and 10-2 in Mid-American Conference play and extended its win streak to seven straight. Ball State moved to 12-8 overall and 7-5 in MAC play.

Sophomore center Monty St. Clair nailed a pair of 3-pointers and added a layup to spur Miami to a quick eight-point lead, 13-5, at the 14:11 mark. Jumpers by Mason and Peavy and a layup from senior forward Tim Schenke increased the Miami led to a game-high nine points, 20-11, by the 9:51 mark. Ball State cut the RedHawk lead to one with 3:34 left in the first half, but a pair of free throws by senior forward Danny Horace and layups by junior guard William Hatcher and Peavy put the RedHawks up seven at the half, 30-23.

Peyton Stovall and Dennis Trammell combined for nine points as the Cardinals went on a 9-4 run to cut the lead to cut the lead to two, 34-32 with 16:31 left, but Hatcher drained a pair of unanswered treys to put Miami back at an eight-point lead with 14:37 left, 40-32. The RedHawks maintained an eight-point advantage with 12:37 left, but the Cardinals went on a 15-3 run to capture a four-point lead by the 5:15 mark, 50-46. The teams traded buckets and Ball State led 52-48 with 2:55 left. A layup by Hatcher with 1:14 left closed the gap to two, and Horace knotted the contest with a layup with 14 second left, 52-52. Peavy tossed in the game-winning shot as time expired to cap the 6-0 Miami run.

Hatcher led Miami with 16 points, while Horace added nine points and 12 rebounds.

The RedHawks continue a two-game road stretch when they travel to Ohio for a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 12. The game will be televised on ONN.
