Box Score
LAFAYETTE, La. - The Miami University RedHawks (0-2, 0-0 MAC) took a one-run lead into the bottom of the eight inning but fell victim to the long ball for the second consecutive afternoon, dropping a 4-3 decision the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (9-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon at Tigue Moore Field.
Sophomore Ryne Robinson (Toledo, Ohio) staked the RedHawks to a 1-0 lead with two out in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI-single to left that scored junior Eric Radley (Gallatin, Tenn.) who doubled with two outs in the inning.
Miami jumped in front, 3-0, in the top of the sixth with junior Geoff Orr's (Orland Park, Ill.) first home run of the season, a two-run shot deep to left field. The blast chased Louisiana Lafayette starting pitcher Hunter Moody who went 5.2 innings and gave up three runs on six hits.
Sophomore southpaw Keith Weiser (Hamilton, Ohio) started on the hill for Miami and held the Ragin' Cajuns to one hit through five innings before surrendering four hits in the sixth and giving up two runs. He gave way to sophomore Jeff Day (West Chester, Ohio) in the top of the seventh inning after striking out five ULL batters in six innings of work. Day entered the game and promptly retired Louisiana Lafayette in order, striking out the first two batters he faced.
The Miami lead did not survive the eighth inning as Josh Landry took Day deep over the wall in right centerfield with a two-run home run, giving ULL its first lead of the afternoon at 4-3 after eight innings.
For the second consecutive game the RedHawks entered the ninth with a deficit to overcome. Freshman Evan Armitage (Milford, Ohio) made his collegiate debut leading off the ninth in a pinch-hitting role and grounded out to first base. Junior Paul Frietch (Cincinnati, Ohio) grounded out to second before junior Will Reynolds (Brownsburg, Ind.) walked to bring up senior catcher John Slone (Cincinnati, Ohio) with two outs. Slone, an all-American in 2004, grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Day was tagged with the loss, dropping his record to 0-2 on the season. Reliever Kraig Schambough picked up the win, tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for his first win of the season.
Senior Brian Canada (Fishers, Ind.) and Slone both had two hits for the RedHawks, who outhit the Ragin' Cajuns 10-7.
Miami will conclude its trip to Lafayette, La., on Sunday with a 10 a.m. CST game against the Marist College Red Foxes.
