ATHENS, Ohio--Miami University's men's basketball team battled back but came up short as the RedHawks were edged by Ohio, 61-57. Ohio improved to 10-0 at home this season, moving to 12-8 overall and 8-5 in Mid-American Conference play. Miami had its win streak end at seven straight and moved to 15-6 overall and 10-3 in the MAC.
A 3-pointer from junior guard William Hatcher and a jumper by senior forward Danny Horace helped Miami gain an early 5-2 edge. The Bobcats went on a 7-0 run to take a 10-5 lead by the 13:01 mark. Miami would close within one point of the Bobcats twice over the next six and a half minutes, but a 3-point play by Ohio's Clay McGowen extended the Ohio lead to six with 2:35 left in the half. Horace hit one of two free-throw attempts and sophomore guard Doug Penno drained one of his four treys for the night to put the RedHawks within two heading into the lockerroom at the half, 34-32.
A layup by Terren Harbut put the Bobcats up four with 18:36 left, however, sophomore center Monty St. Clair hit a trey to pull the RedHawks within one with 18:06 remaining, 36-35. Ohio scored six unanswered points to post a seven-point lead with 14:20 left. Miami staged a 9-0 run off a dunk and ensuing free-throw by sophomore forward Nathan Peavy, a pair of layups by Hatcher and one from Horace to take a two-point lead with 10:30 left, 44-42. Ohio pulled out to a six-point lead by the 6:34 mark, 50-44, but a jumper and a trey by St. Clair kept Miami within one, 50-49, by the 4:02 mark. A Penno 3-pointer knotted the game with 3:09 remaining, 54-54, but Ohio outscored Miami 7-3 down the stretch to take the game, 61-57.
Penno led Miami with 15 points, going 5-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Hatcher followed with 14 points, while St. Clair added 10 for the RedHawks.
Leon Williams led all scorers with 16 points for the Bobcats. Harbut added 15 and Jeremy Fears tallied 10 points.
Miami returns to Millett Hall to host Marshall on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.
