Miami Extends Winning Streak To Four, Defeats Oakland 78-66

Rochester, Mich.--Sophomore forward Tim Pollitz scored a career-high 23 points and added six rebounds, while junior forward Nathan Peavy notched his fifth straight double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard William Hatcher tossed in 15 points as Miami University's men's basketball team seized a 78-66 win at Oakland on Tuesday night.
Miami won its fourth straight game and is second consecutive road game as the RedHawks improved to 4-1 overall. Oakland dropped to 4-2 on the season.
Two 3-pointers by Hatcher and one apiece by Peavy and junior guard Doug Penno spurred Miami to a quick 21-8 lead by the 13:01 mark. Consecutive layups by Peavy and Tim Pollitz extended Miami's lead to 17 points by the 10:36 mark, 27-10. Miami kept its 17-point cushion with another Tim Pollitz layup at 9:40, 29-12.
Two layups by Oakland's David Carson sparked an 8-0 Golden Grizzlie run to put OU within nine by the 5:59 mark, 29-20. A Calvin Wooten trey with 45 seconds remaining further closed the gap to five points, 36-31, but Hatcher sunk a jumper with eight seconds on the clock to send the RedHawks into the half with a 38-31 lead.
A layup by senior center Nate VanderSluis and a three-point play by Hatcher upped the Miami lead to 43-31 by the 18:27 mark of the second half. Oakland stormed back to within one twice, each time off a Wooten layup, closing to within 50-49 with 12:08 remaining.
Three layups by Tim Pollitz and a layup and a trey by Peavy pushed the Miami lead to 61-50 by the 8:50 mark. Oakland pulled within four by the 6:19 mark and was within five at the 4:35 mark, 64-59, but a big trey by Penno and a jumper by freshman forward Michael Bramos and another Tim Pollitz layup put Miami up 12 points, 71-59, and the RedHawks rolled to the 78-66 win.
Oakland was led by Wooten, who also recorded 23 points. Carson added 18 points, while Derick Nelson tallied 13 points and Patrick McCloskey recorded a game-best 15 rebounds.
Miami returns home to host Xavier on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m.
Notes: Peavy's 11 rebounds tied a career-high ... it was Peavy's second straight 20-point scoring effort ... VanderSluis played a career-best 27 minutes ... Miami scored 70-plus points and shot better than 50 percent from the field for the second straight game ... Tim Pollitz scored 13 of his 23 points in the second half, including eight straight Miami points midway through the second half.
