Men's Swimming Finishes Third at Miami Invite

OXFORD, Ohio - In a close finish at the Miami Invitational, the Miami University men's swimming and diving team dropped one spot on the final day as it finished in third place with 1022 points. The RedHawks finished 28 points behind the second-place Emory Eagles, while the Oakland Grizzlies retained the top spot and coasted to the team title with 1243.5 points.
At the Nixon Aquatic Center on Saturday night, Miami's "A" relay squad started the meet with a seventh-place showing in the 200 medley relay, clocking in with a time of 1:34.81. In the event, Oakland set its second meet record in a relay event in as many days, with a time of 1:30.31, besting the old meet record of 1:30.96.
In the 200 back, the RedHawks placed two swimmers in the "C" final. Sophomore Blake Norman (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) and freshman Nick DuPuis (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Norman notched the top Miami time in the event in 1:59.24.
Miami junior Paul Ricard (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) was the highest-placing Miami swimmer in the third day of the meet as he placed second in the "A" final of the 500 free. Ricard's time of 4:30.93 was his fastest time this season as he knocked almost two seconds off his previous season-best of 4:32.91. The RedHawks also had three finishers in the "C" final of the 500 free as senior Scott Robson (Glen Ellyn, Il./Glenbard South), and freshmen Scott DuCharme (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and Jason Bank (Farmington Hills. Mich./North Farmington Hills) finished first, fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the 100 fly, Miami's other "A" finalist junior Andy Amyot (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) posted the second-best finish for a RedHawks swimmer in Saturday's finals as he clocked in with an eighth-place and season-best time of 51.29. Miami also had one "B" final and one "C" final swimmer in the event.
Freshman Davis Mello (Brentwood, Tenn./Christ Presbyterian) was the only Miami finalist is 200 breast, and in the "B" final, he notched a sixth-place time of 2:11.77.
After placing three swimmers in the finals of the 100 free, including ninth-place finisher sophomore Ryan McHugh (Sylvania, Ohio/St. France DeSales) in the "B" final, Miami finished the meet with a eighth-place finish in the 400 free relay, the final swimming event of the meet.
On the boards, senior Eric Teske (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) was Miami top finisher in the three-meter dive, placing second with a score of 654.94. The RedHawks had three of the top five finishers on the three-meter board as senior Zach Niehaus (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) and freshman Chris Heaton (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) finished third and fifth, respectively.
After first-place Oakland, Emory (1050), Miami (1022), Johns Hopkins (1006.5) and Denver (902.5) rounded out the top five teams.
