ANN ARBOR, Mich.--Despite a 50.8 shooting effort from the field, which included 13 3-pointers, Miami University's men's basketball team l(4-4) ost at the University of Michigan (8-1) on Thursday evening, 87-80.
Michigan shot a sizzling 64.3 percent from the field, including a 56.2 percent effort from 3-point range for the game. Miami hit 30 field goals compared to Michigan's 27 and nailed 13 treys to the Wolverines' nine. The difference came at the free-throw line where Michigan went 24-of-31, while the RedHawks shot just eight free throws, drilling seven of them.
Holding a 17-14 lead in the first half, Miami went on a 9-2 run from the 14:20 mark to the 11:57 mark to take a 10-point lead, 26-16. Junior center Monty St. Clair started the surge by drilling a trey, and senior guards Josh Hausfeld and William Hatcher drained 3-pointers during the run. A Peavy layup at 10:59 preserved the 10-point edge, 28-18. Lester Abram hit a field goal with 10:44 remaining, and the Wolverines would shoot nine free throws, making seven of them, over the next four minutes to cut the Miami lead to four points, 31-27, by the 6:20 mark.
Michigan would close the gap to two points twice before Miami took another four-point edge off two Peavy free throws with 3:42 remaining in the half, 35-31. Daniel Horton drilled back-to-back treys to capture a two-point lead at the 2:41 mark, 37-35. Two more Peavy free throws with 2:24 remaining, knotted the game, 37-37, but a dunk by Graham Brown with 32 seconds left put the Wolverines up 39-37. With one second left, Hatcher nailed a 3-pointer to give the RedHawks the 40-39 lead at the half.
In the second half, Michigan piled on the points, hitting 5-of-8 treys over the final 20 minutes of the contest. The Wolverines built their largest lead of the game off a Dion Harris field goal with 4:20 remaining, 78-61. Miami staged a 14-4 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to seven points, 82-75. Hatcher drained two treys, while freshman forward Michael Bramos and sophomore guard Chad Troyer each nailed 3-pointers, and freshman forward Tyler Dierkers added a field goal during the RedHawk surge. Another Bramos trey with six seconds left would again cut the gap to seven points, which would be the final margin, 87-80.
Bramos led all players with 19 points, while Hatcher added 16 points and a career-high nine assists. Peavy was the other RedHawk to score in double figures, chipping in 12 points, and hauled in a game-high nine boards.
Michigan had five players score in double figures, led by Horton's 17 points. Courtney Sims added 16 points and Chris Hunter tallied 15 points, while Brown and Ron Coleman notched 10 points apiece.
Miami continues a four-game road stretch when it faces Cincinnati at U.S. Bank Arena at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
NOTES: Hausfeld made his first start since March 12, 2004 ... he leads all active players in number of games started at 49 .... Miami outrebounded Michigan 27-23 ... Peavy was one rebound shy of recording his sixth double-double of the season ... Hatcher's nine assists nearly matched Michigan's team total of 10 assists.
