Miami Comes Down on Ball State In Overtime, 83-75

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Chet Mason scored 21 points and Danny Horace added 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead Miami to an 83-75 overtime win over Ball State on Saturday.

Miami (4-1, 1-0 Mid-American) used a 16-2 run to lead by as many as 17 points with 3:27 to go in the first half, 35-18. Mason and freshman guard/forward Tim Pollitz each had four points during the run.

Ball State, however, opened the second half with a 14-5 run, capped by Terrance Chapman's free throws to pull to 42-38 with 13:25 left.

The Cardinals (3-2, 0-1) took their first lead of the game with 3:52 left on a 3-pointer by Skip Mills to make it 59-58. With Ball State holding a 65-64 lead, Mason hauled in one of his game-best three steals at a critical point for the RedHawks and tossed in a layup to give Miami the one-point edge with 30 seconds remaining. Ball State came down the floor and launched a three-pointer that was off the mark and Horace came down with the rebound and threw it to Mason, who was quickly fouled. Mason hit one of his two charity tosses to give Miami the two point edge. A layup by Ball State's Michael Bennett with one second to go sent the game into overtime with the score tied at 67.

Ball State took its only lead in overtime on Peyton Stovall's layup to open the period. Monty St. Clair tied the score with a jumper and the RedHawks went ahead on his only 3-pointer of the game. Miami went on to outscore Ball State 16-8 during the overtime period to capture the 83-75 win. This was Miami's ninth overtime game with Ball State and its sixth win when playing extra minutes.

In addition to Mason and Horace, Nathan Peavy posted 14 points and a career-high five assists, while St. Clair tallied 10 points. Mason also notched five assists for the RedHawks and nine boards in 42 minutes of action.

Stovall led the Cardinals with 17 points and Chapman added 16. Mills scored 15 and Dennis Trammell had 12.

Miami led 35-24 at the half.
