OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Matt McCollom scored 15 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining, leading Ball State to a 56-50 win over Miami on Saturday.
McCollom's basket gave the Cardinals (7-6, 4-1 Mid-American Conference) a 51-48 lead. He added two free throws with 42 seconds remaining to make it 53-48, the largest lead of the game for either team to that point.
Juby Johnson's jumper with 32 seconds left pulled the RedHawks (7-6, 3-2) to 53-50. The Cardinals hung on despite making only three of their six free throw attempts over the final 27 seconds.
Cameron Echols added 13 points and Jesse McClung scored 10 off the bench for Ball State.
Johnson scored 16 points, but was the only Miami starter to reach double figures. Danny Horace added 11 points for the RedHawks.
Miami made only 18-of-50 shots (36 percent) from the field and finished 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) at the foul line. Ball State shot only 35.3 percent (18-of-51) from the field and hit on 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) free throws.
