RedHawks Get 68-60 Win Over Akron

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Chet Mason scored 21 points and helped Miami dominate inside to beat Akron 68-60 Saturday night.

Mason and Gene Seals each had 12 rebounds as the RedHawks (6-5, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) built a 39-24 advantage on the boards and collected 38 points in the paint.

Juby Johnson added 17 points for Miami, which never trailed in the second half.

Derrick Tarver had 31 points for Akron (7-4, 1-2), with John Hollingsworth adding 10.

Hollingsworth's 3-pointer with 15:30 left in the half gave the Zips their final lead of the game. With the score tied at 11-11, the RedHawks took the lead for good with a 6-0 run. They led 32-28 at the half but Akron cut that to 54-52 with 4 minutes remaining.

Miami then went on a 7-0 run, starting with Nathan Peavy's three-point play off an assist from Mason before a basket and two free throws by Mason that made it 61-52 with 1:18 left.

Akron hit 48 percent of its shots from the field but had 11 fewer shots from the field and nine fewer free throws.
