BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State freshman Erica Muschamp registered her first career hat trick, scoring all three goals in the second half to lead the Mountaineers to a 4-1 victory over Miami University Monday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Scoring her fourth goal in the last three games for the RedHawks was senior Angie Snedden (Sarnia, Ontario).
Muschamp's hat trick marks the second time in as many games that an Appalachian player has recorded a three-goal game.
ASU senior co-captain Nara Brookes, coming off of a hat trick of her own, opened the scoring 10:58 into the match, giving ASU a 1-0 advantage. Fellow senior co-captain Bridgette Burkhardt assisted on the goal.
The Mountaineers were the aggressors on offense in the first half, outshooting Miami 8-4. However, with under five minutes remaining in the opening period, Miami's Snedden rebounded a blocked shot and put it into the cage to knot the score at 1-1 heading into the half. The goal was Snedden's team-leading fourth of the season.
The Mountaineers came out in the second half firing, taking 11 shots to just two for the RedHawks.
Eleven minutes and 40 seconds into the second half, Muschamp redirected a pass from ASU teammate Andrea Lee to put Appalachian ahead for good at 2-1. The game-winner was the freshman's third of the campaign.
Muschamp was not done, however, as she scored two more goals within the next eight minutes to ice the game. Lizzie Watson and Shannon Fitzpatrick tallied assists on the goals.
The hat trick by Muschamp was the first of her career and brings her season goal total to six, tying her for the team lead with Brookes.
The RedHawks play tomorrow, Sept. 23, as they suit up against the No. 2 team in the country, playing at 4 p.m. against North Carolina.
