OXFORD, Ohio-Despite a valiant effort, Miami University's field hockey team narrowly missed out on its first Mid-American Conference win Friday night, falling 2-1 in overtime to the University of Louisville.
The Cardinals' Olivia Netzler, who was assisted by Lisa Wasser, knocked the game-winning goal past Miami netminder Kerri Matthews with just 8:31 remaining in the first overtime period to negate a gutsy effort by the Red and White, who endured 16 Cardinal penalty corners on the night. Matthews was strong in goal, saving 13 shots on the night.
After a scoreless first half, Louisville finally lit the scoreboard with a goal from Jessica Javalet, who scored in traffic in the 55th minute off an assist by Rachel Overton. To that point, the Cardinals held a 13-0 edge in penalty corners over the RedHawks.
Miami's offense finally found momentum in the final five minutes, when it created its first two penalty corners of the night. Following the second penalty corner, the RedHawks' Angie Snedden managed to place the stick on the ball in heavy traffic and fire a shot past Cardinal goaltender Christy Hershey to send the game into overtime. It was Snedden's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The contest, which marked the 500th coached by Miami mentor Lil Fesperman, dropped the RedHawks to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the MAC. Louisville improved to 6-4 and 2-1 in league play. Miami returns to action on Oct. 10, when it travels to Kent State.
