Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. - The Miami University (11-14-2, 8-11-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) hockey team suffered its fifth shutout of the season Friday night at No. 13 Nebraska-Omaha (17-9-3, 11-7-3 CCHA), 2-0 in the Omaha Civic Auditorium. UNO's goalie Dan Ellis stopped 26 RedHawk shots to earn his second shutout of the season and Perani Cup first-star honors.

Moments after killing a 5-on-3 Maverick power play, Miami allowed an even-strength tally to break the scoreless tie at 5:25. UNO's Chris Claffey rifled a shot, blocker-side top shelf to beat junior goalie David Burleigh (North Vancouver, BC) for the contest's first goal. Finding Claffey at the point and credited with an assist was Brett Davis.

The Mavericks struck again at 12:13 in the second stanza after a missed slap shot by Greg Zanon bounced straight off the boards into the RedHawk crease, and straight onto the stick of Jeff Hoggan. Hoggan stuffed the puck into the net for the power play-goal and a 2-0 UNO advantage. Also credited with an assist was David Brisson.

Two goals was all that Ellis needed in collecting his fifth straight victory, and seventh straight Maverick win. Burleigh stopped 24 shots in the losing effort for Miami.

Miami and UNO go to battle tomorrow night, Feb. 2 at 7:05 p.m. (CDT) to wrap up the weekend conference series.
