OXFORD, Ohio - In the Mid-American Conference Field Hockey tournament nightcap on Friday afternoon, the Kent State University (14-6) blanked the host school, Miami University (2-16), by a count of 5-0 to advance to the semifinals. Freshman Tess Meuleman netted the Golden Flashes first two goals of the game to run her team-leading tally to 16 goals on the season.
The RedHawks battled a solid Kent State offense for 19:29 before finally giving up the first goal of the game to Meuleman. Meuleman played a beautiful deflection into the back of the cage off senior Helen Jerdan's hit on the penalty corner. The Kent State lead was upped to 2-0 at 25:04 when Meuleman netted her second goal of the game, an exact mirror image of her first goal off a Jerdan hit.
Senior Fiona Brew gave the Golden Flashes a 3-0 lead when she one-timed a pass from junior Jennifer MeInyk into the left corner of the goal. Her fourth goal of the season was scored with 3:58 remaining in the opening frame.
It took the Golden Flashes less time in the second period than the first to score as senior Kristen Clayton netted her fourth goal of the season at 7:12. Clayton's goal was unassisted after she streaked past Miami's defense to give Kent State a 4-0 lead.
The Golden Flashes polished off their 14th win of the season senior Megan Spurling netted an unassisted goal at 10:36. After rifling 18 shots in the first period, Kent State toned down the offense by only shooting the ball 15 times in the final period.
Splitting the shutout for Kent State in goal were junior Jessica Creeden and freshman Linz Markwart. Creeden recorded one save in 52:18 and Markwart saw zero shots on net. Sophomore Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra), who entered the contest tied for fourth in the nation in saves (166), stopped 14 shots in the RedHawks final contest of the 2002 season
The Golden Flashes advance on to the tournament's semifinal round as they face the No. 2 seeded Central Michigan Chippewas tomorrow, Nov. 9, at 2:30 p.m.
