OXFORD, Ohio--Despite a valiant effort late in the second period, Miami University's field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Ohio University. The RedHawks (2-12; 0-7 Mid-American Conference) scored with just over a minute left to play, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats (8-7; 4-3 MAC) went on to capture the game.
The two teams went scoreless in the first period, but Ohio scored just minutes into the second period (37:18) and built its lead to 2-0, scoring at the 46:50 mark.
Freshman forward Lindsay Rothenberger tallied Ohio's first goal with the assist from junior forward Elizabeth Holtzman, while senior midfielder Andrea Voros collected the other Bobcat goal off assists from Holtzman and senior midfielder Jenn Watt.
With just over a minute left in the game, head coach Lil Fesperman pulled a defender and sent in freshman forward Lindi Bortnik (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson). Almost immediately Bortnik took a pass from senior back Amy Butterworth (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and drilled a shot past the Bobcat goalkeeper to score the RedHawks' lone goal of the contest at the 68:50 mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra) continued her stellar play, recording seven saves, six in the second half, over a complete 70:00 minutes of play in goal.
The RedHawks return to action at Ball State on Friday, Oct. 25 for a 3 p.m. contest with the Cardinals.
