OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University (2-10) field hockey team collected its second win of the season this afternoon with a 2-0 whitewashing of the Saint Louis Billikens (1-11). Winless in their last eight contests, the RedHawks received goals from junior Amy Butterworth (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and freshman Marnie Pickering (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) en route to the victory.
In a lackluster first half for both teams, neither squad was able to find the back of the net. The Billikens registered two penalty corners to Miami's one, but when both teams only managed to shoot three times the goalies were able to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
However, the second half was a different scene as the RedHawks dominated their offensive end of the field. Butterworth got the Red and White on the board at 7:32 when she scored her first career goal on a penalty corner. Freshman Jessica Saling (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) received the ball on the far post, and immediatly whipped the ball to Butterworth for the easy slam into the goal.
Holding on to a slim 1-0 lead the RedHawks obtained some breathing room when Pickering and classmate Lindi Bortnik (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) worked the Hudson High School connection for their second goal of the game. Bortnik took a shot on a goal and after gathering up her own rebound she found Pickering on the opposite post for the easy strike. The goal is the first of Pickering's career at Miami, while Bortnik now leads the RedHawks with two assists.
Stonewalling the Billikens in net for Miami was sophomore Kerri Orr (San Diego, Calif./Serra) with six saves. The shutout is Orr's second of the season and career. Registering one save in goal for Saint Louis was Leslie Kearns
The RedHawks return to Mid-American Conference action next weekend when they host Kent State on Friday,Oct. 18 and Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 19.
