Men's Hoops Clips Zips, 50-48

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Alex Shorts hit a jumper with five seconds to play, lifting Miami to a 50-48 victory over Akron on Saturday and giving head coach Charlie Coles his 100th triumph at Miami.

Shorts' basket gave the RedHawks (6-9, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) a 49-48 lead.The Zips (4-11, 0-4) were then called for a technical foul for calling a timeout when they didn't have one.

Shorts made one of two free throws to put Miami up two. Akron's Matt Siebert missed a layup at the buzzer that would have tied it up.

Rashon Brown's layup with 12 seconds to play gave Akron a 48-47 lead. He scored 17 points - the only Zip to reach double figures.

Miami scored the first 10 points of the second half to erase a 23-15 deficit.

Doug Davis hit five of the RedHawks' six 3-pointers and scored 20 points. Shorts added 14.

Miami shot just 32 percent from the field, 6-of-21 from 3-point range. The Zips shot 37 percent.
