OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - David West scored scored 29 points, going 10-of-11 from the field and 9-of-10 at the line to lead Xavier to an 87-58 victory over Miami on Wednesday night.

West missed his first shot, an attempt from 3-point range, then hit 10 straight. He also had 17 rebounds.

Lionel Chambers added 17 points for Xavier (2-1). Romain Sato had 12 and Kevin Frey had 10 as Xavier shot 60 percent from the field to 38 percent for Miami.

Alex Shorts led Miami (1-2) with 14 points, and Chester Mason had 10.

Xavier had lost three straight games at Miami, dating to 1993. The win broke a 44-all series tie.

A layup and jumper by Mason gave Miami a brief lead at 19-18 with 7:23 remaining in the first half. But Sato hit a 3-pointer to start a 12-3 run, and by halftime Xavier was in control 38-28.

Xavier started the second half with a pair of baskets by West to begin a 12-4 run. Chalmer had six points in that span, and Miami never got closer than 16 after that.

Miami played without starting forward Eugene Seals, who sprained an ankle in practice. Seals averaged five rebounds and three points a game.

The Xavier win was the first at Miami for the Musketeers new coach, Thad Matta, who was an assistant at Miami in 1994-95 and 1996-97.
