Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Miami University (1-2-1) hockey team suffered its first shutout of the season this evening to Clarkson University, 5-0. Clarkson (1-1-1) made the most of its opportunities against the RedHawks successfully scoring on four-of-eight power plays despite being outshot 28-21.

Through most of the first stanza both teams battled it out in the neutral zone with the home team outshooting Miami, 9-3. However, the Golden Knights scored the game's first goal when senior Matt Poapst found the back of the net on a power play at 14:55. Sophomore Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario) had the RedHawks best chance at scoring when his shot got past the Clarkson goalie but dinged off the far post deflecting a would-be goal wide of the mark.

Miami had several scoring opportunities slip past in the second period as it outshot the Golden Knights 14-8. Clarkson, on the other hand, didn't waste any opportunities as it increased its lead over the RedHawks to two when senior David Evans beat goalie David Burleigh (North Vancouver, British Columbia) for his first goal of the season. Four minutes later on their fourth power play of the contest, sophomore Tristan Lush gave Clarkson a 3-0 lead going into the lockerroom after senior Kerry Ellis-Toddington and freshman Jay Latulippe found him open in front of the Miami net.

The third period was all Ellis-Toddington and the Golden Knights as he tallied his first two goals of the season on five-on-three power play situations. Poapst and junior Dave Reid assisted on both of Ellis-Toddington's goals in the third period. On the other end of the rink, Miami continued its shooting woes as senior Bart Stevens (East Amherst, N.Y.) narrowly missed a goal, instead hitting the pipe. It was the second time in the contest that a Miami shot ricocheted wide off the post.

Clarkson finished the contest four of eight on the power play but junior goalkeeper Mike Walsh also played a large part in the victory. Walsh, while collecting his fifth career shutout, made 28 saves for the Golden Knights to even his season record at 1-1-1. His counterpart, Burleigh, made 14 saves for the RedHawks before being relieved by junior David Bowen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) at 1:08 in the third period. Bowen registered two saves in 18:52 of action.

The RedHawks fall to 1-2-1 on the season and will complete the weekend series with Clarkson tomorrow night, Oct.20, at 7:35 p.m.
