Rob Summers

Rob Summers joined Travis Steele's Miami staff as associate head coach in April 2022.

During his first year in Oxford, the RedHawks went 12-20 and earned a berth in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals as the No. 8 seed. The Red and White won four consecutive games in February to qualify for the postseason after being picked 11th in the preseason poll, including a 17-point win over rival Ohio in the RedHawks’ final home game of the year.

Miami’s Mekhi Lairy was tabbed Third Team All-MAC in 2021-22, while newcomer Anderson Mirambeaux was named Honorable Mention All-MAC after his scoring average jumped from 1.5 points per game at Cleveland State to 14.3 ppg as a RedHawk. Rookie guard Ryan Mabrey was also named to the conference’s All-Freshman Team.

Summers came to Miami after serving the previous three seasons as an assistant coach at Cleveland State. During Summers' time with the Vikings, Cleveland State won the 2021 Horizon League tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009. CSU also shared the 2022 conference regular-season championship, qualifying for the NIT.

The Vikings improved from 7-11 in league play during the 2019-20 campaign to post 16-4 and 15-6 conference marks in the next two years. In Summers' final year on staff, CSU won 20 games for the first time since 2013-14, placing a player on the All-League first team, second team and third team in the process.

Summers served as the team's offensive coordinator, helping Cleveland State improve from 64.2 points per game to 70.9 to 75.4 over his three seasons.

An Ohio native, Summers joined the Vikings after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at James Madison. His previous stops include experience as the head coach at Division II Urbana (Ohio) from 2014-2017, a season as James Madison's director of operations, and two years at Glenville State as the associate head coach and compliance coordinator.

A graduate of Gahanna Lincoln High School, the seven-foot Summers played 56 games at Penn State from 2002-04 before transferring to West Virginia. As a Mountaineer, Summers sat out due to transfer rules in 2004-05 as WVU reached the NCAA Elite Eight before making 33 appearances in 2005-06 en route to a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. In his final season, he was a team captain on WVU's NIT championship squad, starting 36 games and shooting 63.3 percent from the field, a mark that still stands as the second-highest single-season percentage in school history.

Summers was a three-time Big East Academic All-Star at WVU, where he received his bachelor's degree in sports management in 2007 before earning his master's in athletic coaching education in 2012. Summers was selected in the 2007 NBA Development League draft, ultimately deciding to compete overseas. He played professionally in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America.
