Returning to the RedHawks for his third season and second as an assistant coach is Matthew Passauer. Passauer is responsible for the Miami pitching staff.
Last season, Passauer helped guide the pitchers to a team ERA of 3.98, which ranked 50th in the nation. Freshman Sam Bachman was named MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year after going 7-1 with a 3.93 ERA. He also was named First-Team All-MAC. Senior Jack Corbell was named Second-Team All-MAC after going 5-3 with a 3.13 ERA. Passauer’s pitchers ranked 48th in the nation averaging 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings. They set a school records with 508 strikeouts and 15 saves. After the season was over, junior pitcher Spencer Mraz moved on to the professional ranks with the Texas Rangers after being taken in the Major League Baseball Draft.
Passauer spent the 2018 season as the volunteer assistant coach for Miami. He assisted with the team’s offense, as well as pitcher and catcher development. With Passauer’s help, the RedHawks won 35 games, the most since 2011, and saw three players selected in the 2018 draft.
Prior to his time with Miami, Passauer was the head coach of East Georgia State College from 2014-17. During his time with the Bobcats, he helped develop 12 all-conference players, one All-American, one GCAA Player of the Year and one GCAA Defensive Player of the Year. His final two seasons saw EGSC set new school records for wins. In 2017, the Bobcats captured the GCAA Regular Season Championship and Passauer was named GCAA Coach of the Year.
Passauer spent three summers between 2014 and 2016 with the Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods League, a collegiate summer league based in the Midwest. He served as the pitching coach the first two years and was the field manager his final season with the team. During Passauer’s time there, he worked with 23 players who were later drafted and also captured two North Division Championships.
Passauer played collegiate baseball for Maryland, where he played for one year with the Terrapins before moving on to play at Lee University for his final two seasons. With the Flames, Passauer helped the team to two NAIA College World Series appearances and one conference championship.
Passauer received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Lee University and also has a Master’s of Science in Kinesiology with a coaching education emphasis from Georgia Southern University. He recently became engaged to his fiancé Mary Kate Frazier.
