Dusty Hess joined the Miami baseball program as a new assistant for the 2019-20 season. He comes to the RedHawks after spending the past two seasons as the head coach at East Georgia State.
While at East Georgia, Hess held a record of 66-35. He led the team to a league championship in 2018 with a 24-6 record and a second place finish in 2019 with a 20-10 mark. Hess coached 18 All-Conference players, two All-Americans, one Player of the Year, five Gold Glove winners and sent eight players on to Division I schools. In 2018, the Bobcats made it to the District Championship game and finished only one game shy of going to Grand Junction, Colorado for the NJCAA World Series.
Hess was an assistant coach for East Georgia State from 2015-17.
Prior to his time with the Bobcats, Hess was an assistant coach at Skagit Valley College from 2014-15 and Northeastern State from 2011-14. While with Northeastern State, he saw steady improvement from the team as he coached consensus All-American Cody Robinson and MIAA Freshman of the Year Ryan Helsley, along with five All-MIAA selections. In 2013, the RiverHawks led NCAA Division II in home runs (69) and home runs per game (1.35), while finishing fourth in slugging percentage (0.511) and in the top 30 in scoring (7.4), runs (376), doubles (104), and doubles per game (2.04).
Hess began his coaching career as an undergraduate assistant at Kansas State from 2010-11. In 2011, the Wildcats went 36-23 overall and were selected for the NCAA Tournament. Four players were drafted off of that team, with two having made it to the major leagues.
Hess’ father is Don Hess, current and longtime high school head coach at Manhattan High School in Manhattan, Kansas. Hess assisted his father from 2008-10.
“We are lucky to be adding Dusty to our staff,” said Hayden. “He has a lot of coaching experience and has proven himself in his ability to develop players as well as successful teams. Over the last four years his teams have won at an incredibly high rate. It is rare to be able to add someone with his pedigree in this position. He will be a huge part of the puzzle for Miami baseball and our program’s continued improvement.”
Hess earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Kansas State in 2011 and his Masters of Science in Health and Kinesiology from Northeastern State in 2013.
